Zero no Tsukaima 2 – Episode 1: The Lovable Loli-Tsundere is Back Again.

Ah how I’ve been waiting for this one. With the popularity of the first season and how relatively short it was, it’s no wonder that we’re getting a second helping of the infamous pink-haired loli-tsundere and her pet nihonjin. While the plot might turn out to be as typical as the first season, I’m really looking forward to seeing new and old characters and any character development that may or may not happen… and of course seeing Saito getting punished for looking at other girls (other than Louise) always brings up a chuckle.
OP: “I SAY YES” by ICHIKO

ED: “Suki!?Kirai!?Suki!!!” by Rie Kugimiya

It’s not a big surprise that they would use the same artists for the OP and ED… at least it’s not for me. I kind of like these songs better than the songs for the first season. The OP seems to have more emotional energy behind it and the ED is kind of a cutesy song backed up by cutesy SD characters.
Summary

Saito dreams of returning to Japan however, he remembers why he chose to stay with Louise and almost breaks into tears when he sees her again (after waking up from his dream). Although their relationship seems to have improved a little, Louise still feels embarrassed about Saito but, at least lets him sleep in the bed.
Henrietta is to ascend the throne and become queen but, she feels hesitant and does not want to have such a position. Meanwhile, down below in the dungeon, a mysterious woman approaches Furomoru (the bad dude from the first series) and ultimately kills him with the Ring of Andobali. It appears that the woman retrieved the ring due to the entire ruckus with the Coronation Ceremony (didn’t Tabitha have the ring?).
Louise gives Saito a pair of magical glasses that turn out to light up whenever the user looks at someone with perverted thoughts. Of course Saito doesn’t know the function of the glasses at first and gets in trouble for looking at Siesta’s “well-endowment”. Even after knowing this, Saito pretty much gets in trouble for looking at any girl since it seems Saito has perverted thoughts about any girl (even Tabitha). This eventually gets Saito in deeper trouble when Louise punishes Saito in public for looking at Henrietta. Saito gets arrested for being a possible assassin.
Henrietta visits Saito in jail and asks for him and Louise to assist in preventing the upcoming war from starting. Saito agrees and Louise is let in who clings on to Saito (aww… how cute). Henrietta gives Louise the Book of Will which turns out to be filled with blank pages. The next day, Anies Captain of the Firearms Troop, reports to Saito and Louise that Henrietta has been kidnapped.
Impressions

Overall, I thought it was a pretty good first episode. It seemed kind of short since not too much went on in this episode.
While I don’t watch too many sequels, I’m not too sure how many sequels are watchable on their own as opposed to having to watch the first series to understand the second… ZnT2 feels more like the latter. Even though they did show a little bit of what happened in the previous series, I doubt someone watching ZnT for the first time would understand by just watching the second series alone.
It doesn’t seem that too much character development has occurred since the last season despite the fact that Saito and Louise seem to be getting a little closer together. Louise still punishes Saito in the same manner even though she said she wouldn’t in the beginning. Saito still seems to be the horny adolescent teen that he is and chases after any attractive female that he notices and still holds a soft spot for Louise (what a guy).
I’m looking forward to seeing the rest of the series. ^^
